City, State
MCD Architects has partnered with the Salem/South Lyon District Library on two transformative projects, shaping its evolution into a vibrant, community-centered space. From the original 14,000-square-foot library design in 1998 to the expansion and renovation completed in 2019, our team has helped the library adapt to the needs of its growing community.
Historic Sensitivity & Architectural Preservation
This renovation carefully integrates the 1980 design by Gunnar Birkerts, preserving key architectural elements such as:
-
The original skylight, which continues to bring natural light into the space.
-
Windows and mullions, maintaining the character of the existing structure.
-
The Medieval Tapestry assemblage by Glen Michaels, prominently displayed on the far wall.

A Welcoming, Accessible Street-Level Entrance
The new main entrance on Merrill Street creates a clear, accessible pathway into the library. Enhancements include:
-
Automatic sliding doors for ease of entry.
-
Book return slot conveniently located beside the entrance.
-
Snowmelt system to keep sidewalks clear in winter.
-
Outdoor terrace with ample seating and shade, providing a space for visitors to gather and relax.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection
A 13-foot floor-to-ceiling NanaWall allows the library to extend its space outdoors during temperate weather, integrating indoor and outdoor experiences for visitors.
