Orion Township Public Library Is Turning Its Library Into a Destination — Here’s Your Sneak Peek

Michigan libraries are in a moment of transformation. Communities want more than a building with books—they want a place to gather, learn, and feel inspired. That’s why Orion Township Public Library partnered with MCD Architects to reimagine their library from the ground up.

The result? A bold master plan that blends indoor reinvention with outdoor experiences, positioning the library as a true community destination. From bike trails and nature walks to cafés and maker spaces, Orion’s plan shows just how far a library can go when it leans into the future.

A Vision for the Future

Our work began with a space utilization study and master plan that identified the key improvements needed to keep Orion Township Public Library positioned as the heart of its growing community. A key priority throughout was fiscal responsibility — rather than starting from scratch, we focused on adapting and optimizing the existing facility to maximize impact while minimizing costs. By strategically reconfiguring underutilized areas and preserving key building elements, the design team was able to stretch the budget further, reduce waste, and deliver a transformation that feels brand new without unnecessary construction expenses.

From expanded interior spaces to bold new outdoor amenities, every detail was designed with one question in mind: How can this library continue to be relevant, inspiring, and essential in the years ahead?

Bringing the Outdoors In

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is how it leverages the library’s unique location, surrounded by nature. Set beside woodlands, wetlands, and the 36.7-mile Polly Ann Trail—which stretches south toward suburban Detroit—the site becomes more than just a backdrop. The master plan positions the library as a true destination, where visitors can explore natural landscapes or start and end their ride through a convenient Book-a-Bike program offered right on site.

The site plan also introduces an incredible mix of outdoor experiences:

  • A greenhouse facility for year-round educational programming.

  • A community pavilion and event space for concerts, gatherings, and celebrations.

  • A children’s outdoor learning and play area designed to spark imagination.

  • A nature walk and boardwalk winding through wetlands and woods, complete with a Rainbow Bridge to remember and honor beloved pets.

Why does this matter? Because libraries are uniquely positioned to bridge learning with the environment. Outdoor study areas, trails, and event spaces don’t just provide fresh air—they make the library a destination for learning, creativity, and community life. By extending the library experience beyond four walls, Orion Township is showing how green space can become a living classroom, a social hub, and a place of restoration for every patron.

Reimagining the Library Interior

The future library isn’t only about the outdoors. Inside, visitors will find:

  • A welcoming café designed as more than just a coffee counter. It gives students a place to recharge between study sessions, moms a spot to grab a snack for their kids, and the whole community a casual, comfortable meeting place.

  • An art gallery space that celebrates and supports local artists. Rotating exhibits will not only showcase creativity but also give patrons fresh reasons to visit and experience something new each time they step into the library.

  • New study rooms that finally meet the demand for both group collaboration and quiet, individual work. Whether patrons need a space for tutoring, small meetings, or focused study, these rooms will provide flexibility and privacy.

  • A fully equipped maker space that puts tools for hands-on creativity directly into the community’s hands. From 3D printing to crafting, it’s a place where curiosity turns into projects and ideas come to life.

  • An expanded children’s area with a dedicated program room that allows the library to host bigger, better events for families. With more space, the library can welcome larger groups for storytimes, STEM activities, and interactive programs that nurture a lifelong love of learning.

Each of these enhancements answers the growing demand for spaces where people can learn, create, and connect with each other in new ways. Together with the outdoor amenities, the library becomes more than a building—it becomes the heartbeat of the community.
