Salem/South Lyon District Library

A Legacy of Thoughtful Design and Expansion

MCD Architects has partnered with the Salem/South Lyon District Library on two transformative projects, shaping its evolution into a vibrant, community-centered space. From the original 14,000-square-foot library design in 1998 to the expansion and renovation completed in 2019, our team has helped the library adapt to the needs of its growing community.

Expanding for the Next Generation (2019)
In response to the community’s growing demand for children’s and youth services, MCD Architects led a targeted expansion and renovation, building upon the foundation of the original design. The 2019 project added:
A 1,900 SF expansion of the children’s area, featuring engaging, age-appropriate spaces.
A new “tween” area, tailored for middle-grade readers.
A second 955 SF community meeting room, enhancing programming capabilities.
Two additional restrooms and a second entrance, providing greater convenience and accessibility.
A full renovation of the existing children’s area, updating furnishings, finishes, and lighting to create a more dynamic, inviting space.

On June 7, 2019, the community came together to celebrate the completion of this project, with over 1,200 attendees marking the next chapter in the library’s story.
Project Details:
Size: 2,000 SF New, 3,000 SF Renovation
Cost: $950K
Completed: 2019
