Farmington Community Library

A Vision for the Future

Farmington, Michigan

The Farmington Community Library sought a master plan to optimize its 77,000 SF main branch in Farmington Hills and its historic downtown branch, originally designed by MCD Architects in the 1960s. Through in-depth space utilization studies, our team developed strategies for reorganizing interiors, integrating site improvements, and planning future expansions. The master plan also envisions stronger connections between the downtown branch and city assets, creating a cohesive civic hub that enhances accessibility, engagement, and the library’s role as a cornerstone of the community.

Supporting the Library’s 2023-2029 Strategic Plan

The Farmington Community Library’s seven-year strategic plan is built around three key pillars: creating community, expanding connections, and cultivating curiosity. MCD Architects’ space utilization study and master plan directly support these goals by reimagining how both library branches can better serve their patrons.

At the downtown branch, proposed site improvements will integrate the library more closely with city hall, public safety offices, and surrounding businesses, reinforcing its role as a vibrant civic hub. Meanwhile, interior reconfigurations across both locations will provide more adaptable spaces for programming, collaboration, and independent study—ensuring that the library remains a cornerstone of community engagement and lifelong learning for years to come.

A Legacy of Design: Our History with the Farmington Branch

MCD Architects’ relationship with the Farmington Community Library spans decades. When the Farmington Branch was first envisioned in the early 1970s, our firm—then known as Merritt, Cole & McCallum—was selected to design the new facility.

Unveiled in June 1974 and completed in December 1975, the 18,000-square-foot library was designed to serve a growing population with thoughtfully arranged spaces. The lower level was dedicated to children’s services, featuring a beloved reading treehouse, an auditorium, and a local history room. The upper level provided distinct zones for fiction and nonfiction collections, a cozy lounge with a stone fireplace, and a dedicated quiet room, furnished through generous community donations.

Today, as we develop a new master plan for the library’s future, we honor the foundation laid by our original design while crafting spaces that will continue to inspire, educate, and connect the Farmington community.
