Plymouth District Library
A Legacy of Collaboration and Innovation
Plymouth, Michigan
MCD Architects played a pivotal role in the creation of the Plymouth District Library’s state-of-the-art 54,000-square-foot facility. In response to the community’s growing needs, MCD Architects led the design of a new building to replace the outdated 14,000-square-foot facility, which had multiple additions that made expansion impractical. Our team guided the library through a comprehensive needs assessment, identifying the requirement for a larger, more modern space to accommodate future growth.
After evaluating several potential sites, the downtown Plymouth location was selected to keep the library at the heart of the community. The design reflects the character of downtown Plymouth while offering modern amenities for the future. The new two-story library boasts a dynamic, flexible layout that includes a variety of spaces for learning, collaboration, and community events, reinforcing the library’s mission to serve as a central hub of knowledge and connection.
This project, completed in 1998, represents a long-standing partnership between MCD Architects and the Plymouth District Library, continuing our shared commitment to creating spaces that serve both current and future generations of library users.

Designed for the Future
This renovation didn’t just add space—it redefined what a children’s library could be. Thoughtfully designed to support multiple learning styles, it ensures that every visitor, from toddlers to elementary schoolers, can engage in meaningful, hands-on discovery.
A Legacy of Smart Planning
This transformation was decades in the making. When MCD Architects originally designed the building, we strategically left the second floor unfinished to allow for a seamless expansion when the time was right. That vision paid off—saving the library significant costs and ensuring this renovation could be executed flawlessly.
