Redford Township District Library
Expanding the Heart of a Thriving Community
Redford Township, Michigan
An Ambitious Beginning
When MCD Architects designed the original 65,000-square-foot library in the early 2000s, we laid the groundwork for growth. The two-story structure was intentionally designed with only the first floor completed, ensuring a seamless and cost-effective expansion when the time came.
That vision became reality in 2024, as the library transformed its unfinished second floor into a dynamic, state-of-the-art children’s area.
A Destination for Learning & Discovery
Inspired by the Rouge River, which winds through Redford Township, the new children’s space immerses visitors in a series of interactive, themed environments—wetlands, meadows, urban landscapes—all connected by a whimsical wooden bridge. Thoughtfully designed for all ages, from toddlers to school-age learners, this space is regarded as the best children’s library in the region.

Designed for the Future
This renovation didn’t just add space—it redefined what a children’s library could be. Thoughtfully designed to support multiple learning styles, it ensures that every visitor, from toddlers to elementary schoolers, can engage in meaningful, hands-on discovery.
A Legacy of Smart Planning
This transformation was decades in the making. When MCD Architects originally designed the building, we strategically left the second floor unfinished to allow for a seamless expansion when the time was right. That vision paid off—saving the library significant costs and ensuring this renovation could be executed flawlessly.
