Salem-South Lyon District Library

Transforming a Historic Institution with Modern Innovation / Honoring History, Elevating Design

Birmingham, Michigan

When Salem-South Lyon District Library set out to expand its children’s area, it wasn’t just about square footage—it was about creating a space that would grow with the next generation. MCD Architects partnered with the library to design a thoughtful renovation and expansion that brought new life to the building and deepened its role as a community hub.

The project added nearly 2,000 square feet to the children’s wing, including a bright, engaging new space for early readers and a dedicated “tween” zone for middle-grade students. A new 955-square-foot community meeting room expanded program potential for patrons of all ages. Renovations also included a second entrance, new restrooms, and refreshed finishes, lighting, and furniture throughout the original children’s area.

When the library reopened in June 2019, over 1,200 people showed up to celebrate—a clear sign the investment resonated with the community.

A Library Rooted in Its Community

When MCD Architects designed the original 14,000-square-foot library in 1998, the goal was to create a space that reflected the area’s rural charm while preparing for future growth. Inspired by the character of local family farms, the traditional architectural style blends timeless aesthetics with modern infrastructure. Forward-thinking design choices—including expansion-ready space—ensured that the library could seamlessly adapt to the needs of a growing population.

Project Details (1998):

Size: 14,000 SF New Construction
Cost: $2.4M
Completion: 1998
