Salem/South Lyon District Library: Growing with the Community

Expanding Possibilities, Enriching Lives

Salem, Michigan

A Thoughtful Expansion for the Next Generation
Libraries are more than just buildings—they are spaces where communities grow, learn, and connect. MCD Architects’ long-standing partnership with the Salem/South Lyon District Library has resulted in a facility that not only honors its rural roots but continues to evolve alongside its patrons.

In 2019, a strategic expansion and renovation transformed the library, focusing on enhancing services for children and young readers. The project added:

  • A 1,900 SF expansion to the children’s area, creating dynamic, engaging spaces.

  • A new “tween” area designed specifically for middle-grade readers.

  • An additional 955 SF community meeting room, expanding programming opportunities.

  • New restrooms and a second entrance, improving accessibility and convenience.

  • A full renovation of the existing children’s space, with updated furnishings, finishes, and lighting.

On June 7, 2019, over 1,200 community members gathered to celebrate the grand reopening—proof of the library’s lasting impact and the excitement surrounding its growth.

Project Details:

  • Size: 2,000 SF New, 3,000 SF Renovation

  • Cost: $950K

  • Completion: 2019

A Library Rooted in Its Community

When MCD Architects designed the original 14,000-square-foot library in 1998, the goal was to create a space that reflected the area’s rural charm while preparing for future growth. Inspired by the character of local family farms, the traditional architectural style blends timeless aesthetics with modern infrastructure. Forward-thinking design choices—including expansion-ready space—ensured that the library could seamlessly adapt to the needs of a growing population.

Project Details (1998):

Size: 14,000 SF New Construction
Cost: $2.4M
Completion: 1998
